A 16-year-old boy was in critical condition

Saturday after falling 30 feet off the cliffs in San

Pedro, authorities said.

The unconscious boy was airlifted to County

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was

listed in critical condition, said Los Angeles Fire

Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The incident occurred at 3:37 p.m near Point

Fermin Park.

"We were the first on the scene," said Los

Angeles County Lifeguard Capt. Mike Inscore.

"We had one of our lifeguards swim in from a

Baywatch boat to assist."

Few other details were available late Saturday.

"He was out with some of his friends in the

Sunken City area," Inscore said. "I don't know

how he got there."

Aside from the trauma the boy received to the

head, Inscore did not see other injuries.

Inscore said that five lifeguards assisted in the

rescue, along with about eight firefighters.
