Injured Man Airlifted To UCLA Medical Center

(CBS) PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. According to a lifeguard, a 53-year-old man suffered a spinal injury at Will Rogers State Beach on Monday.

Michael Pichugn was in the water when a large wave knocked him over, said Capt. Robert Torres, Ocean Lifeguard at Will Rogers State Beach.

"His friends pulled him out and the lifeguards were right there to receive him," he said. "When he got up, he wasn't feeling too good. He had neck and back pain."

An air ambulance crew was sent to Palisades High School around 2:35 p.m. to transport Pichugn to UCLA Medical Center, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

His condition was not currently known.

"I always tell people, ‘swim and surf near a staffed lifeguard station,"' Torres said.
