2 Rescued From Trapped Sailboat In Malibu
(CBS) MALIBU, Calif. Two people were rescued Thursday from a 34-foot sailboat that got stuck on rocks during low tide at Paradise Cove, and the boat was towed out to sea, authorities said.
The trimaran boat, which has three hulls, had been moored in the Paradise Cove area. It got stuck on the rocks about 2 a.m., said Capt. Terry Harvey of the Los Angeles County lifeguard division.
Rocks punctured the boat's bow and it started taking on water, he said.
Lifeguards rescued the two people on the boat a short time later, then brought in pumps to suck the water out of the boat. A diver also used special plugs to patch holes.
"The boat isn't a total loss," Harvey said. He said trimaran sailboats cost $50,000 or more depending on equipment.
Lifeguards waited for the tide to rise before towing the boat out to deeper water.
The boat was en route to the Marina del Rey Harbor by about 9 a.m., said Inspector Ron Haralson of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
There were no reports of injuries, authorities said.
