NEWPORT BEACH - A captain of a 54-ft. sailboat was forced to abandon his vessel after she caught fire 18 miles off the coast of Newport Beach May 5.
Capt. Jacob Fehr was sailing to San Francisco on Nada Mas when the vessel unexpectedly caught fire.
Fehr escaped the flames in his dinghy and was rescued by a commercial vessel after a distress call came in at about 2:30 p.m.
Los Angeles County Firefighters based on Catalina responded to the call, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
When the time came to tow the boat, officials opted to let her drift.
"It was the Coast Guard's call and they told us to let [her] drift, so we did," said Orange County Sheriff's Harbor Patrol Deputy William Nelson. "We don't know where [she's] at today."
