-- After years of operating out of a double-wide trailer, the Redondo
Beach Harbor Patrol will move into a new facility, by 2010. The city
has begun the conceptual design process and is currently seeking
comment from the community.
Two temporary buildings -- one that serves as garage for vehicles
and the other that provides housing for Harbor Patrol personnel -- and
a permanent “crow’s nest” observation tower currently are used by the
city’s Harbor Patrol. As the conditional use permit for both facilities
expired, the city began to contemplate fulfilling the California
Coastal Commission’s requirement of constructing a permanent structure
for the department.
Jeff Townsend, associate engineer for the city of Redondo Beach,
held a meeting with community members and the architectural design firm
Terrazas & Associates to discuss the proposed project, Nov. 6.
“It went great: Everyone was really supportive,” Townsend said.
Community stakeholders commented on the possibilities of creating a
sailing program near the north end of the mole rather than the south
end, to better utilize parking and boat launch ramps, he added.
Terrazas & Associates is currently collecting public input,
developing a conceptual design and creating plan specifications. The
current building that sits on Mole B in King Harbor is showing wear and
tear from the saltwater environment and use for the past 17 years.
The project will consist of replacing the existing facilities with
permanent ones, replacing deteriorating wood docks with concrete docks,
remodeling the interior of the observation tower and adding space for
the Los Angeles County Lifeguard Department.
The proposed 3,810-square-foot, two-story building will be for
public safety personnel use. The buildings first level will serve the
County Lifeguard Department and house bedrooms, bathrooms and storage
facilities for the lifeguards. Harbor Patrol officers and county
lifeguards will share a kitchen and office located at the observation
tower.
Three bedrooms, an office, a kitchen, a fitness room and bathrooms
for both men and women will be housed on the second floor, for Harbor
Patrol use.
The city has received tidelands grant funding to replace the
portable trailer and temporary aluminum garage, and appropriated funds
to replace the existing docks. Construction is expected to begin in
Fall 2009.
The conceptual design is expected to be presented to the city council next month.
